I just completed my first spin class today and immediately fell in love.
Spinning is an indoor cycling workout that ANYONE can partake in! Spinning is perfect for an athlete or a fitness newbie; it is an extremely customizable workout because YOU control your own intensity level on your bike.
Here's how it works. Classes generally take place in a fitness studio at a gym with a few rows of special bikes (i.e. Schwinn, Reeok, LeMond), a good amount of sweaty people and loud, upbeat music blasting through the speakers. These bikes are no ordinary road bikes, each has a lever, or sometimes a dial that you twist to increase or decrease the resistance all to fit YOUR ability level.
There is one instructor at the front of the room riding his/her bike along with you screaming out commands. "Climb out of the saddle," she/he may yell, meaning stand up from your seat and peddle, or "Get ready to ride up the hill," so riders increase resistance and prepare to pedal fast.
The best spinning class is when you have a great instructor who continuously motivates you to keep moving and never give up. But, remember, the intensity of the class is all up to you and your exertion rate. You don't have to increase your resistance on command, rather go at your pace; you'll be sure to enjoy the class more.
The key to remember about cycling is to NEVER stop pedaling. Even if you are exhausted and need a break, just keep moving your feet slowly with a low resistance.
Some quick benefits of spinning:
1) Extremely effective workout every time
2) You'll get in great shape if you give each class your best shot
3) Each class is different (i.e. different playlist, new people, etc...)
4) You'll leave class feeling rejuvenated and energized
5) Anyone can spin so give it a shot
Don't be shy, give it a try! Chances are, you'll feel nervous your first class and maybe even a bit intimidated, but don't worry, think positive, ask others in the class for help with how to use the bikes (as I did my first class) and get ready for a workout like no other!
Tweet me your advice on spinning or what your first class was like @foodsfitfabyou or put up a picture on instagram and let's see how creative you can get with spinning photos!
Have fun and work hard! :)
